Zhambyl region is located in the South of the Republic of Kazakhstan and occupies 144.3 thousand square kilometers of its territory. More than 1 million 120 thousand people live in the region, among which 61% live in rural areas. The population is represented by more than 90 ethnic groups and nationalities. The region was formed on October 14, 1939 and has the regional center – the city of Taraz and 10 administrative districts.
The historical and cultural heritage of Zhambyl region is represented by 3441 monuments, including 5 UNESCO monuments (Balasagun, Kulan, Ornek, Kostobe and the mysterious Palace complex "Akyrtas"), 2 monuments included in the world list of objects of special tourist attraction of the Eurasian economic cooperation organization (EECO), 25 monuments of national and 3416 monuments of local significance. Of the 3,416 monuments, 2,934 are archaeological and 507 are architectural and urban monuments. There are also 181 hotels, 282 food outlets, 5 sanatoriums, 5 recreation areas, 2 Yurt towns, 11 children's health camps, 46 tourist companies, 56 artisans and 25 transport entities in the region.
In the region there are 5 nature reserves: Berikkarinsky, Karakonuzsky, Andasaysky, Merkensky and Umbetsky nature reserves. The first and oldest exotic state reserve "Aksu-Zhabagly" with rich flora and fauna is located in Zhualy district. The total area of the hunting grounds is 13.5 million hectares, where more than 40 species of animals live, such as snow leopards, Karatau argali, bears, porcupines and other rare animals.
Along with traditional types of tourism, almost all existing types of tourism are developing in Zhambyl region – historical and cultural, pilgrimage, medical, educational, ethnic, entertainment, equestrian, environmental and extreme types of tourism. For tourists, a large number of travel routes are offered throughout the territory of Zhambyl region.
According to the special project "100 sacred places of Kazakhstan", the Republican sacred map has been developed, which includes 8 historical and cultural objects of our region: Mausoleums "Karakhan", "Aisha Bibi", "Babaja Khatun", "Tekturmas", "Baizak Batyr Mambetuly", Ancient Taraz settlement, "Zhaisan" sanctuary and the mysterious Palace complex "Akyrtas".
