Altynshoky

Located 12 km west of the village of Sarlyk in Ulytau district of Karaganda region. In 1935, at the peak of Altynshoky Mountain, the famous scientist K.I. Satpayev discovered stone slabs with the inscription. According to some sources, the locals indicated the place of the stone to the scientist. In 1936, during the arrival of the scientific expeditions of Leningrad, the slab was transported to the State Hermitage. By the end of the year, the historical monument was delivered to the Hermitage, and subsequently, the scientific investigation of the object began.

As a result of research by Soviet scientists, a translation of the content of the inscription on the stone was presented to the public. The translation of the inscription into English is provided below: «In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful! Lord of the Existent, Sanctuary of Truth, Vigilant Protector, Almighty and Almighty, the Wise giver of life and death! In the summer of seven hundred and ninety-third, in the year of the sheep, in the middle spring month (April 6, 1391), the Sultan of Turan — Timur-bek went with two hundred thousand troops, for his own sake, against the Khan of the Golden Horde — Tokhtamysh. Having reached this area, he erected this mound to have a memorial sign. God willing, God grant justice! May the Lord show mercy to the people of the country! May they remember us with a prayer!».

There is a possibility that the inscription was carved in stone by Timur. In 1391, during the campaign of Tamerlane against the Khan of the Golden Horde Toktamysh, he stayed in Ulytau. According to sources, Tamerlan ordered his army to raise one stone to the top of the mountain and build a high mound. Then, next to the mound, he ordered the installation of a sign, a slab. The remains of a volumetric melting furnace were also found at this location.

Currently, this stone slab is stored in St. Petersburg, in the Hermitage Museum. Now an exact copy of the stone with this inscription of the emir, made in the 90s of the 20th century, is installed on the peak of Altynshoky.

Today Altynshoky is a place for pilgrimage and a tourist attraction.
